I had a weird dream that was computer animated, but had a stop-motion look where some girl was the richest mans daughter. Her mother created a savings account for her to go to college. The daughter and friends dressed in a costume of their father to take out the money early.

This was in the future and when the banker offered her paperwork to sign, she pretended to be offended. “Splotching is so out of style! I can’t believe you are asking for blood!” She poked her finger and gave a sloppy bloody fingerprint. The banker looked at her weird. It was so old, he needed a signature, but she didn’t know what that was.

A friend posted some Nano notes, so I thought i’d post some of my notes from “The Lion and the Adder” a short story I wrote last quarter.

Possibly one of the best blogs I’ve seen in a LONG time. I only wish I knew this person in afk-life so I could pay her to copy edit and make comments about my writing. It’s witty and she points out things that bother me as well and it would be cool to have this kind of feedback.

Also remember to read the tags - I love her references to movies like Donnie Darko and Finding Forester.

I feel like so many prosers (yet another made up word?) also write poetry, but I have no interest in writing it. I don’t dislike poetry, per se, I’m just not very interested in it. Plus, sometimes I feel like I don’t get it (I’ve done some very close readings of very famous poems for school, but…

I’m the same way. I feel I see things poetically, but I’m not one for writing poems.

My biggest problem: The science behind scenes. I feel I need to immerse myself in research before being able to write a scene. I always question if it would really work that way or if I was breaking the laws of physics.

This sounds like a pretty cool new Tumblr, it just looks like it needs some people to help get it going.

From their home page:

WCT-o stands for Writing Challenge Trade-Off. The idea of this is to challenge other writers to write what they have problems with. This means that if you have problems with characterization, you will be challenged to write about a full character. If you have problems with settings, you will be challenged to explore all the minute details of a strange world.

Check out the links on the left-hand side of the screen for more details about WCT-o

For now, WCT-o is simply trying to get on top of wobbly legs.  Please check back for more information and updates! If you have a question or concern, please put a message in my message box and I will try to answer you ASAP!

Challenge Accepted?

I hope a bunch of you will go check it out and sign up so that it can get going, cause it seems like a really great idea!

Thank you to asoaktrees for sending this in!

from another blog of mine:

character-traits:

She can remember years and months when this happened but only because she remembers stuff around the incidents (weather, what apartment, holiday, job, boyfriend, class, etc.) So Many things change, it’s like multiple calenders.

character-traits:

All dreams have no beginning. They start halfway into a scene (fool the audience, but if they go back through, can tell dreams always start in progress).

This is from another blog of mine.

character-traits:

The commuter doesn’t know where he is in the city by landmarks or street names, but by traffic obstructions causing him to be late for work.

He remembers:

- Potholes that are never fixed
- Sewer drains
- Construction zones
- Turn-only lanes
- Lanes that shift over one space randomly
- The Faith…

Selfish people do not remember names and they call people nicknames that describe their appearance - often degrading or bland.

Example: The woman. The short man. The man wearing glasses. The blind guy.

Writers who don’t remember names, at least remember character traits and roles.

Example: The overworked mother. The nicely-dressed banker. The college girl. The woman that had laugh lines, but sadness in her eyes. The banker who isn’t a banker.

Writers remember odd details of people and their names are only important when they go with or against a character trait.

Example of times when names would be remembered: An evil man named Mr. Goodman. Todd Esfall. Rabbi Schutz. A pale man named Mr. White. A religious family who named all their kids after books in the Bible. A narcissistic guy named Alexander (the Great).

I noticed my need for having something to do with my hands transfers into my writing. Examples: When I tried writing as detailed as possible about a character in a dream, I mentioned how he rubbed the corner of his laptop bag. In my priest story, I have the rabbi organizing and holding objects and one of the clients counting with his fingers and the main character’s first action was to wipe his eyes.

Also, as someone with a film and broadcast journalism background, I tend to want to have my characters always doing things. Such as the rabbi organizing a shelf when having a conversation, moving papers out of the way, throwing away trash, etc. Like I can’t sit still so I don’t expect my characters to either.
